Experiences & Tours

Possessing more towers, domes and palaces than many cities in Italy put together, this UNESCO World Heritage site is steeped in history, dating back to 49 BC when it subsequently became one of the most important towns in Lombardy. During medieval times and throughout the Renaissance Bergamo has quietly been a power to be reckoned with, and today is actually the second most visited city in Lombardy after Milan. Both the Lower and Upper Towns still retain an air of majesty, effortlessly blending art and history with their numerous Roman ruins, Renaissance churches and Neoclassical facades.

The lush vegetation of the sweeping hills around the walled city is the stunning backdrop for ancient churches, century-old villas, cobblestoned alleys and stunning piazzas. In addition to all the historical monuments, the birthplace of operatic composer Donizetti is the home to masterpieces by Botticelli, Mantegna, Bellini and Raphael, while the jaw-dropping frescoes by Venetian-born genius Lorenzo Lotto are on view right across the town.

A lively, dynamic city all year round, artistic culture is matched by the area’s wealth of gastronomic fare: from the Slow Food philosophy to closely regulated top-notch cheeses, and from outstanding cold cuts to excellent local wines, Bergamo is quite simply, as its Tourist Board proclaims, “an Italian masterpiece”.

Whether or not time is of the essence, taking a private guided tour with Elena is the very best way to get the very most out of even a short trip to Bergamo: enquire about availability and we’ll ensure your tour is personalised to cover everything on your Wish List. If it is your first visit to the town we’ll ensure you see all the most important highlights of the fortified Upper Town within the three-hour time frame; if you have been before we will suggest less well-known features that most people won’t have had the pleasure of experiencing.

For those keen to explore the Lower Town, the Accademia Carrara has a wealth of world-class masterpieces on display, while the more out-going can scale the heights from the pinnacle of the upper funicolare, or walk the 5 km stretch of the fortified walls while learning about the trials and tribulations of a city that was never vanquished. Elena is an expert in eno-gastronomia, so is especially passionate about all things food and wine related. It is also possible to combine a private guided tour of Bergamo with a personalised wine-tasting at the incredible Castello di Grumello just 20 minutes away.
